| HOW TO PRONOUNCE HIS NAME: LiveJournal post by a native Hungarian speaker (SIL78): (posted with permission) So, I noticed everyone has a preferred name for Marton: Marton, Martin, Marty... I always call him Marci ("c" is pronounced as "ts", like in "tsetse" or "hats"), because I'm Hungarian (like Marton's father), and that's the Hungarian nickname for Márton. ;-) Or sometimes even Marcika (little Marci). Or Marcikám... (my little Marci... *slaps herself*) He must have been called that in his childhood a lot. :-P BTW, his last name, Csokas (Csókás, "cs" is pronounced as "ch" in "change", "s" as "sh", the vowels are long) is an attribute, an adjective made of the word "csóka" (which is a kind of bird, a jackdaw, to be exact). And actually, Hungarian names have a reversed order: names begin with the family name, and first name is the last, so he would be Csókás Márton in Hungary. |
